System Integrity & Maintenance Efficiency

Robust Drainage Solutions and Precision Sealing for Long-Term Reliability.

Beyond the Treatment Process

A Ballast Water Management System is a complex hydraulic circuit. To ensure its longevity, two supporting components are vital: Drain Pumps and Seal Units.

Drain pumps remove stagnant water from the reactor to prevent bio-fouling and corrosion during idle periods. Seal units maintain pressure-tight integrity around UV lamps and quartz sleeves. YAF Diesel provides factory-certified BSKY drain pumps and comprehensive seal kits engineered for abrasive, corrosive seawater service.

Critical Components & Their Roles

1) Automated Drain Pumps

After a ballasting operation, the BSKY system can initiate a Drain sequence. The drain pump clears the UV reactor and hydrocyclone of standing water—helping prevent mineral scaling on quartz sleeves and limiting stagnant seawater corrosion.

The pump is integrated with PLC logic to run only when main ballast pumps are off and valves are correctly positioned.

2) High-Performance Seal Units (O-Rings & Gaskets)

The interface between the quartz sleeve and stainless reactor is a critical seal point. BSKY genuine seals use high-grade Viton / EPDM / Silicone materials engineered for UV-C exposure and thermal load from Medium Pressure lamps.

Generic rubber seals often degrade rapidly under UV exposure. Genuine BSKY seals are UV-stabilized to reduce cracking and leaks.

Maintenance tip: The 12-month seal rule. Even if no leaks are visible, replace UV reactor and quartz sleeve seals every 12 months or whenever a lamp is changed. Seals take a compression “set”; once disturbed, they may not reseal perfectly, risking water ingress into electrical housings.

Technical Advantages

Feature BSKY Drain & Seal Specification
Pump Type Self-priming centrifugal or diaphragm (model dependent)
Pump Material Bronze or Stainless Steel (AISI 316) for seawater duty
Seal Materials UV-resistant Viton / EPDM / high-purity Silicone
Pressure Rating Seals tested to 1.5× standard operating pressure
Protection Thermal overload protection for pump motors

Pre-Packaged Maintenance Kits

Annual Service Kits include the necessary O-rings, gaskets, and pump seals in one box—ready for planned maintenance.

Chemical Resistance

Seals are matched to common maritime cleaning agents to maintain elasticity and sealing force over time.

Risk note: A leaking seal or failed drain pump can lead to water ingress and electrical shorts in UV housings. If you see “weeping” at the reactor head or the drain pump loses suction, email electric@yafdiesel.com.tr with photos and alarm logs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is it important to drain the system after every use?

Stagnant seawater can cause pitting corrosion and encourage anaerobic bacteria. Draining extends reactor life and helps keep quartz sleeves clearer for the next operation.

Can I use standard industrial O-rings for the Quartz Sleeves?

No. Standard O-rings are not designed for high UV-C intensity and heat from Medium Pressure systems. They can become brittle and fail quickly—use genuine BSKY UV-stabilized seals.

What should I do if the drain pump is making a loud noise?

Often this indicates cavitation or a blocked suction strainer. Check air-release operation and discharge line clearance. If noise continues, the mechanical seal or bearings may require replacement.
