Critical Thermal Management
Medium Pressure UV lamps operate at high temperatures to achieve total biological inactivation. To ensure the safety of the equipment and the vessel, the water temperature inside the UV reactor must be monitored with absolute precision.
YAF Diesel provides genuine BSKY Temperature Sensors designed to act as the “thermal watchdog” of your system. These sensors help keep the reactor within its certified temperature range, protecting quartz sleeves, seals, and the UV lamps.
Why Temperature Monitoring Is Essential
1) Overheat Prevention (Safety Trip)
If ballast water flow stops or slows while UV lamps are at high power, the water in the reactor can heat up rapidly. The BSKY temperature sensor detects the rise instantly. If temperature exceeds a pre-set safety limit (e.g., 45°C to 50°C), the PLC can dim lamps or trigger an emergency shutdown to protect internal components.
2) Protection of Quartz Sleeves & Seals
Rapid fluctuations can cause thermal shock to quartz glass and degrade O-rings. Stable, accurate temperature monitoring helps extend the life of sleeves and seals, reducing leak risk and unplanned maintenance.
3) Explosion-Proof (Ex) Safety
For tankers, temperature monitoring is a mandatory safety layer for ATEX/IECEx environments. In BSKY Ex-Series, sensors help ensure reactor surface temperatures remain within safe limits for hazardous zones.
Technical Advantages
BSKY temperature probes are chosen for fast response, high accuracy, and durability in vibration-heavy engine rooms. Exact stem length, thermowell type, and connection details are supplied per BSKY model and vessel layout.
| Feature | BSKY Temperature Sensor Specification |
|---|---|
| Sensor Type | High-precision PT100 or PT1000 platinum resistance |
| Material | Seawater-resistant stainless steel (316L) thermowell |
| Accuracy | ±0.1°C (Industrial Class A) |
| Response Time | High-speed thermal conductivity for rapid detection |
| Protection | Vibration-resistant design for engine room mounting |
Thermowell Advantage
Thermowell protection allows sensor replacement without draining the reactor (depending on installation).
Matched Resistance Curves
Correct calibration to BSKY PLC inputs helps prevent false trips and unstable readings.
Maintenance Tip: Electrical Connections
In humid, salty engine rooms, terminal connections can oxidize over time. During annual health checks, we recommend inspecting the sensor junction box and terminals for corrosion to keep the resistance signal accurate.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the normal operating temperature for a BSKY UV reactor?
Depending on ambient water temperature, the reactor typically operates between 15°C and 35°C. Many systems alarm around 40°C and shut down at approximately 45–50°C (site settings may vary).
Can I use a standard PT100 sensor from a local supplier?
We do not recommend it. BSKY sensors use specific housing lengths and seawater-resistant materials. Non-genuine sensors can cause incorrect readings, sealing issues, or safety risks that may affect Type Approval compliance.
Does the system monitor the temperature of the control cabinet?
Yes. BSKY systems typically include cabinet temperature monitoring to protect UV power supply units and electronics from overheating.
